Explore Hibernating Antarctic Zoo at Glasgow Science Centre

02 May 2012

Edinburgh may have its pandas but for one day only Glasgow will be home to some amazing wildlife of its own. Professor Hildeberg’s Hibernating Antarctic Zoo will have its world premiere at Glasgow Science Centre this May Bank holiday (Monday 7 May) and this FREE event is not to be missed.

Renowned naturalist and explorer Prof Hildeberg has made it his life’s work to locate and protect rare species in hostile climates. His expeditions have led him to discover creatures living in habitats so remote, with such extreme temperatures, that they have never before seen by mankind- until now! Visitors to the Glasgow Science Centre will be the first in the world to explore this comical Antarctic zoo.

Dr Robin Hoyle, Director of Science at GSC, said:

“It’s a real coup for GSC and Scotland that the Professor has accepted Glasgow as the venue for his world premiere, before the exhibition moves south to other venues in the UK and European mainland. We’re delighted to be the first venue to showcase this unique opportunity for the public to experience first-hand the wonders of Antarctica and facilitate scientific and artistic exploration. This free event is bound to be popular and what better way to spend a bank holiday than exploring a comical Antarctic hibernating zoo.”

Ian Smith, Artistic Director of Mischief La-Bas:

“We are really excited about organising the tour for Professor Hildeberg, and honoured that we will be responsible for providing the first opportunity to see such wonders as hibernating Sealbats and Antarctic Hedgehogs. It’s going to be a great day for all the family, and something that should linger in the public imagination for years to come. It certainly makes a change for us to be involved in something serious and scientifically valid, rather than the humorous nonsense we are perhaps renowned for.”

Tour tickets must be booked in advance by calling 0141 420 5000 or by visiting the Centre.

There are lots of fun things to do in the Centre this May Bank Holiday weekend-  2 acres of interactive exhibits, workshops, shows, activities, the planetarium and an IMAX. Control objects with the power of your mind, build a rollercoaster and look into the future- just some of the exciting things you can do with our interactive exhibits we have in the Science Mall. Roll up, roll up for the Science Show Theatre and get your ‘Game On’. Go for gold as you investigate the science of sport and the impact of diet and exercise on your body and athletic performance. Cast off in The Big Explorer as you splash about in the Waterways exhibit, put on a puppet show and master the bubble wall (for under 8s).
