Neither Here nor There: Jupiter's Connection to its local space environment

Dr. Licia Ray, Lancaster University

Jupiter is the king of the planets, a rapid rotator that hosts the volcanically active moon, Io. Together, Jupiter’s strong magnetic field and material ejected from Io’s volcanos generate the largest magnetosphere in the solar system. The dynamics in this vast region of space are controlled by the motion of the plasma, planetary magnetic field, and the planets atmosphere. Come discover how Jupiter’s atmosphere is connected to the local plasma environment – and how this interaction leads to some of the most exciting auroral emissions in the Solar System!

About the Speaker

Dr. Licia Ray

Dr Licia Ray is a Senior Lecturer in Space and Planetary Physics at Lancaster University. Over her career, she has received many awards, including the 2022 Royal Astronomical Society James Dungey Lecture and a US National Science Foundation International Research Fellowship. Her research explores many aspects of gas giant systems, including the coupling between gas giant atmospheres and their local surroundings, the drivers of auroral emissions, particle acceleration, atmospheric outflow, and x-ray emissions. Dr Ray enjoys sharing her love of the Solar System with interested audiences and helping to inspire the next generation of space physicists.

About the Planetarium

Planetarium

The Planetarium at Glasgow Science Centre has been upgraded to a spectacular, state-of-the-art, fulldome digital projection system (what a mouthful!). Our shows are live presenter-led or film based to take you on a journey through the solar system, into the Milky Way Galaxy and beyond, offering a truly out-of-this-world experience. Our spectacular full dome films display 360 degrees across the 15-metre hemispherical dome of the planetarium. It really is spellbinding stuff.
