Make Your Mark
About the Make Your Mark project
'Make Your Mark' was a fantastic opportunity for the CLD team at Glasgow Science Centre to engage with a diverse group of people from the local community.
Through a series of interactive online workshops, participants were invited to find out more about Glasgow Science Centre’s outdoor redevelopment and how it could be made into a more inviting public community space by coming up with design ideas that represented their life and where they live. The designs would be used to decorate the concrete bollards, which are used as safety barriers, in the outdoor space.
Using the theme “Connection” as their inspiration, a total of 77 designs were received from people of all ages and backgrounds. While only 16 designs could be used, a special bollard has been commissioned to showcase everyone’s design in “Make Your Mark”.

Participant feedback
The bollard art competition certainly brought the Leverndale community together, involving ward staff, clients, family members and community clients. Everyone was excited that the art designs would be displayed outside for everyone to visit.
It has been rewarding to see the project develop, to notify all the winners and to get involved in the opening event. This has been a new, fun experience and proved to create a buzzing atmosphere for everyone.

Participant feedback
The Science Centre is a vibrant and fun source for information and education. I hope my artwork reflects the inspiration and enthusiasm I experienced while working with the Centre’s Community Team.

Partner organisation feedback
The project aimed to address this Outer Space as a bit of a blank canvas that everyone felt could be more engaging and more welcoming.
The work that has resulted will make a significant change to the area and is the start of something that harnesses the dynamic inside the building and uses it to animate the landscape all around.
What is very clear is how much people loved the opportunity to make a mark in public space.
